We're a small charity making a BIG difference!

Aphasia Support is a Yorkshire-born charity passionately created by people with Aphasia, and their carers.

Originally known as Speak with IT, the charity was founded in 2011 by a group of local people who were struggling to access speech and language therapy for themselves or their loved ones.

United by their lived-experiences and shared values, they formed a committee and founded our charity with a mission to create a world where every person with Aphasia has access to support.

We provide our services free of charge and rely on the kindness and generosity of our community. Over the past year, our charity has helped 225 people with Aphasia to communicate with confidence.

What is Aphasia?

Aphasia is a language disorder which affects a person’s ability to speak, read, write and understand language. It is often the devastating result of a stroke or head injury.

Whilst Aphasia affects a person's ability to communicate, it does not affect their intelligence.

There are an estimated 350,000 people living with a diagnosis of Aphasia in the UK. The disability is life-changing. Many find it challenging to navigate daily life, resulting in loneliness and isolation.

How can Aphasia Support help?

At Aphasia Support, our mission is to improve the wellbeing of people with Aphasia and their carers by providing tailored speech and language therapy and long-term support.

We strive to enhance the quality of life for people with Aphasia – helping them to regain control, confidence and independence.

Our pathway of support includes:

  • 1:1 computer therapy focus
  • 1:1 supported conversation
  • Aphasia Cafe group sessions

We accept referrals from organisations and healthcare professionals, including the NHS. We also accept self-referrals from people with Aphasia, and their carers.
