Pathway of Support

Aphasia Support is a registered charity providing tailored speech and language therapy and long-term support to people with Aphasia, and their carers.

We offer 3 options of support for people with Aphasia.

A client can enter any stage, or make the gradual progression from 1:1 speech and language therapy to long-term group support.

Option 1

1:1 computer therapy focus

  • Focus on language outcomes.
  • SLT review with person with Aphasia after period of six months (and end of iPad/app loan).
  • Decision to progress to option 2 or 3.
  • Clients spend a maximum of 6 months at option 1.

Option 2

1:1 supported conversation focus

  • People with Aphasia can be referred directly into option 2
  • Focus on wellbeing/quality of life outcomes.
  • With or without iPad/computer therapy apps (client preference).
  • Monitored/reviewed by Aphasia Support in discussion with volunteer, carer and client every 6 months.

Option 3

Signposting to group support options

  • Aphasia Support cafe.
  • Aphasia Support carer support option.
  • Another support provider.

Every client is assessed by a member of our team who will create a bespoke support plan to meet each individual's personal objectives.

The Aphasia Support team includes qualified Speech and Language Therapists, experienced Speech and Language Therapy Assistants and passionate volunteers.

Meet our team

Due to funding, we are currently only able to accept 1:1 referrals for clients who reside in West Yorkshire, Harrogate and Barnsley.

We are able to provide long-term group support to Yorkshire residents following a referral. A list of our in-person Aphasia Cafe locations can be found here, and we also host online sessions via Zoom.

Please know we are working tirelessly to raise the funds required to meet demand for our services across the UK. If you would like to help Aphasia Support open a group in your area, please contact our team.

Make a referral

Aphasia Support accepts referrals from healthcare providers, including qualified Speech and Language Therapists. We also accept self-referrals from people with Aphasia, carers and other organisations.

Please include as much information as possible relating to a person’s spoken output, reading, writing and language comprehension as this will ensure the support we provide is guided from the outset.

Once you have completed the referral form, a member of our team will be in touch shortly.

Please Note: Due to high demand for our service, we are currently operating a waiting list.
