The next few years are going to be very exciting for our charity as we launch our branch network and seek to expand the reach of the charity.

We are proud to say our mission is to improve the wellbeing of people with Aphasia and their carers. We are ambitious and want to grow and improve the quality of the support we provide.

Come join us as a trustee!

Who are we?

Aphasia Support is a Yorkshire based charity who support people with Aphasia on a one to one basis and a group basis through our Aphasia Cafe's. Our mission is to improve the wellbeing of people with Aphasia and their carers, by providing tailored speech and language therapy and long term support. We want to create a world where every person with Aphasia has access to support.

We have 5 key aims

· To reduce isolation of people with Aphasia

· To improve the communication skills and wellbeing of people with Aphasia

· To raise awareness and understanding of Aphasia

· To improve the knowledge, skills and confidence of carers and volunteers in providing support to people with Aphasia

· To supplement NHS services by providing long term support for people with Aphasia

What will you be doing?

Aphasia Support are looking for committed, enthusiastic and experienced people to join the Board of Trustees. We are looking for people with experience in the following areas to help steer the charity as we aim to become sustainable for the long term:

· Finance and accounting

· Person with lived experience of Aphasia

· Adult Speech and Language Therapy

Aphasia Support currently have 7 trustees with 3 of the group having Aphasia with 1 carer of a person with Aphasia. The charity has been awarded National Lottery Reaching Communities funding in 2017, 2020 and 2023 and are hopeful of continuing the funding relationship further from 2025 as we seek to spread geographically across the UK. We are looking for new trustees to assist the charity as it seeks to broaden its support offer and our geographical reach while at the same time being as sustainable as we can be.

The Board of Trustees sets the vision, the strategic direction, and management of the charity. It is responsible for overall governance which includes being guardians of the charity’s assets, overseeing operational effectiveness. All trustees are unpaid. The Board generally meets every 3 months on Monday mornings from 10.30am on zoom. There will be further opportunities to take part in subgroups focusing on specific aspects of the charity's work, for example Strategy, Finance, Governance & Risk and Performance.

What's in it for the volunteer?

This opportunity will provide the right person with a unique opportunity to put their stamp on a forward thinking and growing charity and to make a real difference in a field of work where there really is no other charity operating and where NHS support is time limited. When people with Aphasia are discharged from NHS support they feel left behind, which is where our charity comes in. We are one of the very few charities in the UK providing long term, home based, one to one support for people with aphasia to help them improve their ability to communicate using technology and supported conversation.
