Position: Finance Trustee
Hours: 10-15 per month
Location: Remote 
Salary: Unpaid (voluntary)

 

The Charity:

Aphasia Support is a passionate, community-centred charity. Our mission is to improve the wellbeing of people with Aphasia and their carers by providing tailored speech and language therapy and long-term support. We want to create a world where every person with Aphasia has access to support and can communicate with confidence. 

Aphasia Support is looking to recruit a Finance Trustee to help shape and sustain the future of our growing charity. You will join our committed and diverse Board of Trustees, working alongside our dedicated staff team, to help bring Aphasia Support to under-resourced communities across the UK.

 

Our Aims:

  • To reduce isolation of people with Aphasia.
  • To improve the communication skills and wellbeing of people with Aphasia.
  • To raise awareness and understanding of Aphasia.
  • To improve the knowledge, skills and confidence of carers and volunteers in providing support to people with Aphasia.
  • To supplement NHS services by providing long term support for people with Aphasia.

 

The Role:

  • Provide overall oversight for the finance function at Aphasia Support.
  • Lead the Finance sub-committee of trustees with support from the Chief Executive (CEO). These meetings are held on Zoom.
  • Liaise with the charity’s management accountant and CEO with regards to bi-monthly management accounts and year end accounts.
  • Liaise with the CEO and management accountant with regards to preparation of the charity’s annual budget.
  • Deliver a clear presentation of the financial performance of the charity at the AGM, ensuring the presentation is ‘Aphasia-friendly.’ Support will be provided by the speech and language therapist trustee and CEO.
  • Attend full trustee meetings which take place 4 times a year and provide financial updates at each meeting. (Please Note: Quarterly board meetings are typically held on a Monday morning at 10.30am via Zoom. There is expected to be 1 Wakefield-based in-person trustee meeting held during the year).
  • Additional opportunities to join sub-groups focused on areas such as Strategy, Finance, Governance & Risk, and Performance.

 

Your Qualifications & Experience:

  • Experience of dealing with charity finances.
  • Knowledge in financial management best practice.
  • Practical experience in budget management, risk management, financial controls and financial accounting.
  • Finance experience at mid/senior level.
  • Understand and accept the responsibilities and liabilities of trustees.
  • Non-judgmental and respectful of views, values and cultures that are different to your own.
  • Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to exercise good independent judgement.
  • Able to dedicate 10-15 hours a month of your time.
